WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?
Sleep apnea (also called Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA) is a condition that occurs when the movement of air between the nose and mouth to the lungs is difficult and less oxygen enters the bloodstream. This lack of oxygen causes frequent awakenings during the night. Consequently, you accumulate a lack of restorative sleep and increased daytime sleepiness.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
OSA can occur in men, women and children of all ages, regardless of their size. Most people with OSA are unaware of their condition. It is often another person, a spouse or a partner, who notices the first signs of OSA. If you or someone you know snore regularly and have any of the following symptoms, it may be OSA.
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES?
People who do not seek a diagnosis and an effective treatment for their OSA run the following risks : a greater risk of hypertension, a greater risk of cardiac arrhythmia, more frequent absences from work, reduced work performance, depression, an increased risk of cerebrovascular accidents, a higher risk of traffic or work accidents.
