WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?
Sleep apnea – also known as obstructive sleep apnea or OSA – is a condition that occurs when it is difficult to move air from the nose and mouth to the lungs and less oxygen enters the bloodstream. This lack of oxygen leads to frequent awakenings during the night. As a result, you accumulate a lack of restful sleep and increased sleepiness during the day.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Sleep apnea can occur in men, women and children – of all ages – Regardless of their size. Most people with sleep apnea are unaware of their condition. It is often another person – sleeping in the same household – who notices the first signs of OSA. If you – or someone you know – snores regularly and has any of the following symptoms, it may be sleep apnea.
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF OSA?
Untreated sleep apnea can significantly decrease a person’s life expectancy and quality of life. Because the condition develops slowly, people rarely realize the extent of their problem. The Alzheimer’s Foundation states that “in addition to its already known effects such as mood disorders and fatigue, sleep apnea is a risk factor for high blood pressure, stroke and the development of Alzheimer’s disease.”
